Bacopa in PureLung: An Ayurvedic Herb, Not a Lung One

Quick answer

Bacopa monnieri is a creeping marsh herb used in Ayurvedic tradition and studied mainly for memory and thinking tasks. It is listed fourth in the PureLung blend, so it can weigh at most 150 mg per serving. We found no evidence that bacopa helps the lungs, and some people report stomach cramps.

What is bacopa?

Bacopa monnieri, sometimes called brahmi, is a plant that grows in wet places. In Ayurvedic medicine it has a long history of use. In supplements it usually appears as a dried herb or an extract with a stated amount of active compounds called bacosides.

What does the 20% mean?

The label prints 20% beside the name. It does not say what the figure measures. Extracts are often standardised to a group of compounds, but we cannot say that this one is, and the figure is not the milligrams per serving.

Where does it sit in the blend?

Bacopa is fourth. The ceiling rule gives a maximum of 600 divided by 4, so 150 mg per serving. The actual amount could be less, and the label gives no figure. Even at the ceiling, the dose would sit below many amounts used in studies, which is a reminder that ceilings show limits and nothing else.

What studies cover

Most trials of bacopa look at memory, attention and learning in adults, with extracts taken for weeks or months. Results are mixed, and trial quality varies (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). No study of bacopa asked whether it helps breathing, lung capacity or the airways.

That mismatch is the main point: an ingredient with a thinking-task record sits on a bottle labelled for the lungs.

Safety notes

Reported effects include nausea, stomach cramps and loose stools, especially at higher doses or without food. Bacopa may interact with some medicines, including those for thyroid conditions, those that slow the heart and some that act on the brain.

  • Take capsules with food to reduce stomach upset.
  • Tell your pharmacist if you use thyroid medicine, sedatives or heart medicine.
  • Stop if you feel dizzy or very tired.
  • Keep a note of the date you started, so a change in how you feel can be linked to the capsule and not to a cold or a poor night.
Pregnancy

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established. Ask a clinician before taking any supplement that contains it.

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

Why does a lung bottle contain it?

We cannot say, and the seller has not explained it. Several of the eleven names look better matched to memory, eye or circulation products than to breathing, and the front of the bottle makes no disease claim. If you buy the capsule for the lungs, read the full list first, and decide whether that list matches your reason.

It is fair to put that question to the retailer in writing, and to keep the reply with your order records. For more, see the bacopa monnieri page and the ingredients hub.
