Chronic Cough: When to See a Doctor and What to Expect
A cough that lasts eight weeks or more in adults is chronic and deserves a visit. Common causes include post-nasal drip, asthma, reflux, smoking and some blood pressure medicines. Coughing blood, weight loss, fever or breathlessness are red flags. A lung capsule cannot find or treat the cause.

What counts as chronic
Most coughs from a cold clear in one to three weeks. A cough lasting more than three weeks is called subacute, and one lasting eight weeks or more in adults is called chronic. At that point it is worth finding the cause (NHLBI, How the Lungs Work).
Common causes
A short list covers most cases.
- Post-nasal drip from allergy or sinus problems.
- Asthma, sometimes with no wheeze, called cough-variant asthma.
- Acid reflux.
- Smoking and chronic bronchitis.
- A medicine side effect, such as ACE inhibitors for blood pressure.
- Lingering effects of an infection.
- Less often, lung disease, heart failure or cancer.
Red flags
Coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever, chest pain, breathlessness, hoarseness that lasts or a swelling in the neck need prompt care. So does a new cough in a long-term smoker (NHLBI, COPD Symptoms).
Severe trouble breathing, a lot of blood or blue lips need emergency help.
What the visit involves
Your clinician will ask about the cough: when it began, whether it is dry or brings up mucus, triggers, smoking, work exposures and medicines. They listen to the chest and may suggest a chest x-ray, spirometry or other tests (NHLBI, Tests for Lung Disease). They may try a treatment for the likely cause and see if the cough eases.
Before the visit
Keep a short diary for a week, even a few lines a day on your phone: time of day, what sets it off, mucus and whether it wakes you. List your medicines and supplements. Bring a photo of any supplement panel.

Do not smoke, avoid smoke and fumes, drink fluids, use a humidifier if the air is dry, and sip warm drinks. Honey may soothe adults and children over one year, and a cool drink or lozenge may ease a tickle. Rest your voice if it is sore. Keep track of whether any change you try makes a difference, so your clinician can see what you have already done. Avoid cough suppressants in children without advice.
