Cinnamon Extract in PureLung: Cassia, Ceylon and Coumarin

Quick answer

Cinnamon extract is listed second in the PureLung blend, so it can weigh at most 300 mg per serving. The label does not say which cinnamon species it is. Cassia types carry more coumarin, which matters for the liver in large amounts. No study ties cinnamon extract to lung support.

What is cinnamon extract?

Cinnamon is the inner bark of trees in the Cinnamomum family. An extract concentrates certain compounds from the bark, and the strength depends on how it is made. Cooks use the spice in tiny amounts, while supplements use capsules.

Cassia and Ceylon

Two groups dominate the market. Cassia, grown mostly in China and Indonesia, is the common and cheaper kind. Ceylon, sometimes called true cinnamon, comes from Sri Lanka and has a milder flavour. Cassia carries much more coumarin, a compound that can harm the liver in sensitive people when taken in large amounts (NCCIH, Cinnamon).

The PureLung label says cinnamon extract and does not name the species. That is a gap worth asking about.

Where does it sit in the blend?

Second of eleven. The ceiling is 600 divided by 2, so 300 mg per serving. The real figure is unknown, and may be far smaller, but it is one of the two largest names on the panel by weight order.

What research covers

Studies of cinnamon look mostly at blood sugar, cholesterol and digestion, with mixed results. They use stated extracts and doses. None looked at lung health or breathing in healthy adults, and none tested this capsule. NCCIH's guidance for cinnamon notes limited evidence for health uses and the coumarin caution.

Who should be careful?

A few groups have a better reason than others to ask before taking a cinnamon extract.

  • People with liver disease or who take medicine that affects the liver.
  • People who take diabetes medicine, since cinnamon may act on blood sugar.
  • Anyone who is pregnant or nursing, since larger medicinal doses have not been well studied.
  • People with allergy to cinnamon, who may react with a rash or mouth irritation.
Tell your pharmacist

If you use diabetes or liver medicine, ask a pharmacist to check the full panel before you start. A short visit is worth the time.

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

What can you do with this information?

First, write down the question for the retailer: which cinnamon species, which extract and how much. Second, if you already eat a lot of cinnamon in food or drink, add that to the picture. Third, stop if you see warning signs on the side effects page.

The ingredient entry is on the cinnamon extract page. The best-supported steps for lung health do not involve cinnamon at all (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy).
