Do Lung Supplements Work? What the Evidence Says

Quick answer

No lung supplement is proven to clean, repair or protect the lungs. The American Lung Association says detox and cleanse products lack evidence, and health agencies point to not smoking, clean air, activity and vaccines instead. Some nutrients have studies in specific conditions, but those do not carry over to a general lung capsule.

What do lung health groups recommend?

The American Lung Association lists steps for healthy lungs: do not smoke, avoid secondhand smoke, test your home for radon, avoid air pollution, prevent infections, get regular exercise and see a clinician about symptoms (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy). Supplements are not among them.

That is the baseline to hold in mind when you see a capsule for sale.

What the word work can mean

For a supplement to work, you would need proof that it changes something that matters, such as a symptom or a breathing test, compared with a look-alike. For most lung supplements, the proof is missing, thin or from other conditions.

Where research exists and where it stops

Nutrient research
NutrientWhat research covers
Vitamin DLow levels link to some lung problems, but trials of supplements give mixed results
Vitamin CStudied for colds and in some groups, with limited benefit for most people
Omega-3Studied for inflammation, with mixed lung results
NACStudied in some chronic lung conditions under medical care
Green teaMostly drinking studies, which cannot prove cause
MulleinLittle human research

Each of these has its own detail in our guides, and none shows that a general lung capsule works.

Why a good study of one thing does not carry over

A finding about one nutrient, in one group, at one dose, does not transfer to a blend where the dose is hidden. People in studies often have a specific condition, which a supplement label may not mention. Results in a lab dish or in animals also often fail in people.

What to look for

A trial in people, with a comparison group, at the dose in the product, measuring a lung outcome that matters, published in a journal. Few products have one.

Risks of relying on one

A capsule can cost money, delay a clinic visit, interact with medicines or give a false sense of safety to a person who smokes. The bigger harm is delay: a cough that lasts weeks needs a check, not a purchase.

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

What to do instead

Use free steps with a record. If you smoke or vape, get quit help at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (Smokefree.gov, Quit Smoking or Vaping). Check the air quality before outdoor exercise (AirNow, Air Quality Index). Ask a clinician for a breathing test if symptoms persist (NHLBI, Tests for Lung Disease).
