Exercise and Lung Fitness: What Training Can Do for Breathing

Quick answer

Regular exercise does not make lungs bigger, but it strengthens breathing muscles, improves how well muscles use oxygen and lowers the effort of breathing at a given pace. Start slowly, aim for most days, and ask a clinician first if you have lung or heart disease. It beats any supplement for breathing fitness.

What exercise changes

The lungs themselves do not grow with training. The gains are elsewhere: the heart pumps more per beat, muscles take up oxygen more efficiently, and breathing muscles get stronger. The result is less breathlessness at the same effort. The American Lung Association lists regular exercise among the top steps for lung health (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy).

Types

Aerobic activity such as walking, cycling and swimming builds stamina. Strength training builds muscle, which lowers the oxygen needed for daily tasks. Flexibility and balance work help posture and falls. Breathing exercises can be added.

How much

Many adults aim for around 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus strength work twice a week. If that is too much, start with five or ten minutes a day and build up. Something is better than nothing.

Getting started safely

Pick an activity you enjoy and begin at an easy pace. A pair of good shoes and a safe route matter more than any gadget, and a friend to walk with makes it easier to turn up when the weather is poor. Use the talk test: you should be able to speak in short sentences. Warm up and cool down. Increase time before intensity. Rest when you need to.

Stop and seek help

Chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness or a very fast heartbeat during exercise need 911.

With a lung condition

People with asthma, COPD or other lung disease can and should be active, with a plan. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs combine supervised exercise with teaching, and have strong support in COPD care (NHLBI, COPD Treatment). Use your rescue inhaler as directed, and carry it. Avoid exercise in poor air.

Lung capacity myths

Devices that claim to train the lungs vary in evidence. Inspiratory muscle trainers are used in some medical programs, and are best used with guidance. A capsule does not raise lung capacity, and PureLung makes no such claim.

Staying motivated

Set a small goal, track it, find a friend, and vary routes. Rest days matter. Sleep and food help recovery. If you miss a week because of a cold, restart at about half of your last pace and build up again over a week or two, rather than trying to catch up in a day.
