Ginkgo in PureLung: What It Is and the Bleeding Caution

Quick answer

Ginkgo is a leaf extract listed eighth in the PureLung blend, so it can weigh at most 75 mg per serving, and the real amount is not printed. Research on ginkgo centres on memory and circulation, not lung function. It may raise bleeding risk, so ask a clinician before surgery or with blood thinners.

What is ginkgo?

Ginkgo biloba is a tree native to China, and supplements usually use a standardised extract of its leaves. It is one of the most studied herbal products, and also one of the most commonly combined with other supplements.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health summarises that evidence for memory and other uses is mixed, and that studies do not show a clear benefit for preventing memory loss (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

Where does it sit in the blend?

Ginkgo biloba is eighth of eleven. The ceiling rule gives a maximum of 600 divided by 8, or 75 mg per serving. The actual amount may be much less, and the label does not print it. That figure is a limit, not a dose, as the blend page explains.

What research says, and what it leaves out

Most ginkgo studies looked at older adults and cognitive tasks, at doses printed on the product and with a defined extract. None looked at whether ginkgo changes lung function in healthy people when taken inside this blend. A study of one extract at one dose does not carry over to a capsule where the dose is hidden.

The bleeding caution

Memorial Sloan Kettering notes that ginkgo may affect how blood clots and may interact with blood thinners (MSK, Ginkgo). For that reason many clinicians ask patients to stop ginkgo before surgery.

  • Tell your surgeon and dentist about every supplement.
  • Ask a pharmacist if you take warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel or an anticoagulant.
  • Report unusual bruising, nosebleeds or bleeding gums.
Seizure and allergy cautions

Ginkgo may interact with medicines for seizures, and people with allergy to related plants may react. Ask your clinician.

Who should be especially careful?

People who take blood thinners, who have a bleeding disorder, who are about to have surgery or a dental procedure, who are pregnant or nursing, or who take seizure medicine should speak with a clinician first. That advice applies to the whole capsule, not to ginkgo alone, because the other ingredients also have their own cautions.

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.
