Green Tea Extract in PureLung: Caffeine and Liver Notes

Quick answer

Green tea extract is listed last in the PureLung blend, so it can weigh at most about 55 mg per serving, and the real amount is not printed. Drinking green tea is well studied. Concentrated extracts, taken in high doses, have been linked to rare liver injury, so keep to the label and report warning signs.

What is green tea extract?

Green tea extract is a concentrate made from the leaves of the tea plant. Its main compounds are catechins, and some extracts also carry caffeine. A cup of tea and a capsule of extract are not the same thing, even when both start from the same leaf.

Where does it sit in the blend?

It is eleventh of eleven. The ceiling is 600 divided by 11, about 55 mg per serving. That is a limit, not a dose, so the actual amount may be smaller. On the panel this makes it the lightest named ingredient.

What research covers

Large amounts of research look at drinking green tea, mostly in observational studies, which cannot prove cause. Studies of concentrated extract exist but use specific doses and extracts. NCCIH says green tea as a drink is likely safe for most people, and that extract in high doses has been linked to liver problems in rare cases (NCCIH, Green Tea).

None of this research tested the lung effect of the extract in this capsule.

Caffeine and sleep

Some extracts carry caffeine, and some are decaffeinated. The label prints 50% beside the name without saying what it measures, and does not say whether it is decaffeinated. If you are sensitive to caffeine, take the capsules early in the day and pay attention to sleep, heart rate and nerves.

Liver warning signs

Rare liver injury has been reported with concentrated green tea products, mostly at high doses and on an empty stomach. Stop taking the capsule and call a clinician if you notice:

  • Dark urine or pale stools.
  • Yellow skin or eyes.
  • Strong pain in the upper right side of the stomach.
  • Unusual tiredness with nausea.
Combine with care

Other supplements may also contain green tea extract. Check all your labels so the amounts do not add up without you noticing.

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

Tea or capsule?

If you like the taste, a cup of green tea is simpler and carries a known profile. It does not clean or protect the lungs either, and the ALA does not list it as a lung treatment (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy). The green tea extract page carries the ingredient entry.

Tell a pharmacist about any medicine you take, since tea compounds can interact with some drugs.
