Pink Salt in PureLung: The Heaviest Name on the Panel

Quick answer

Himalayan pink salt is listed first, so it weighs the most of the eleven names, up to the full 600 mg ceiling. It is a salt, mostly sodium chloride with traces of other minerals. No amount is printed, and no study shows that swallowing salt supports the lungs.

What is Himalayan pink salt?

It is rock salt, mined in Pakistan and sold in pink and white crystals. Its colour comes from traces of iron oxide. Chemically it is mostly sodium chloride, the same compound as ordinary table salt, with small traces of other minerals.

Claims that it holds dozens of minerals are true in a narrow sense, and the traces are too small to change your diet.

Why does it come first?

The panel lists names in descending order of weight, so pink salt weighs at least as much as any other name. Under the ceiling rule, it could be anything up to 600 mg of the serving. The label gives no figure. This is the one clue that the leading ingredient is a salt.

How much sodium is that?

Salt is about 40 percent sodium by weight. If the salt were 300 mg, that would be around 120 mg of sodium per serving, a small share of a daily intake of about 2,300 mg recommended as a limit for adults. That figure is an example for scale, not a measurement, because the real amount is unknown.

Check the panel

Supplement panels list sodium when the amount is 5 mg or more. If your bottle shows no sodium line, ask the seller why.

Who should ask a clinician?

People on a low-sodium diet, with high blood pressure, kidney disease or heart failure, should ask before adding any salt-containing supplement. That is general advice, not a sign of danger at this label's amounts.

  • Show the panel to your pharmacist.
  • Count the sodium from all your supplements.
  • Tell your clinician if you notice swelling or a rise in blood pressure.

Salt and the lungs

Some people link salt to the lungs through salt rooms or salt inhalers. Those are inhaled uses, with their own questions, and nothing about them shows that swallowed salt reaches the airways. We found no study that supports a lung role for swallowed salt (Cleveland Clinic, Sea, Kosher and Pink Salt).

Salt is also a cheap bulk ingredient. Its first place on the list tells you something about weight, not about benefit. If the capsule is mostly salt by weight, the other ten names may be present in small amounts, which is worth knowing before you judge the blend by its length.

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.
