Lung Cleanse Tea: Claims, Ingredients and What to Ask
A tea cannot cleanse the lungs. Warm drinks can soothe a throat and thin mucus a little, but no tea is shown to clear lung tissue. Herbal blends vary, and some include caffeine, laxative herbs or plants that interact with medicines, so read the ingredient list and ask a pharmacist.

What lung cleanse teas promise
Product pages describe teas that clear mucus, flush toxins or restore lungs after smoking. The words sound gentle and natural. The proof behind them is thin, since the American Lung Association finds no support for cleanse products (ALA, Can You Detox Your Lungs?).
What a warm drink can do
A warm drink can soothe the throat, add fluid and feel comforting during a cold. Water, broth and plain tea can do that too. Staying hydrated helps keep mucus thin. These are ordinary comforts and not a cleanse, and they cost almost nothing. If a tea brand charges a premium for the same warm water with herbs, ask what you are paying for.
Common ingredients and what is known
Herbal lung teas often mix several plants. Check each name against a trusted source.
- Green or black tea carries caffeine and has a large research base for drinking.
- Mullein is a traditional herb with little human research behind it for the lungs.
- Peppermint can soothe the throat but may worsen reflux.
- Licorice root may raise blood pressure and lower potassium with heavy use.
- Thyme and ginger are common kitchen herbs with mild effects at food doses.
- Senna and other laxative herbs sometimes appear in "cleanse" teas and can cause cramps and diarrhea.
Cautions
Teas can interact with medicines, and a tea with many herbs hides amounts just like a proprietary blend. Pregnancy, nursing, liver disease and blood thinners all call for a question to a clinician. Allergy to plants in the daisy family can matter for some herbs.
A tea called cleanse may include a laxative herb. A cup of it will clean out your bowel and not your lungs.

If you like tea, a plain cup of warm tea with honey can ease a sore throat in adults. Do not give honey to a child under one year. Keep the cup away from the face when it is steaming hot, and do not breathe in very hot steam.

What to do about a lingering cough
A cough that lasts more than a few weeks, brings up blood, comes with weight loss or fever, or follows smoking needs a clinician. A tea cannot find the cause. A breathing test, a chest exam or imaging might (NHLBI, Tests for Lung Disease).
For comparison with capsules, see the lung supplements guide.
