Lutein and Zeaxanthin in PureLung: Eye Nutrients
Lutein and zeaxanthin are yellow plant pigments best known in eye research. They appear fifth and tenth in the PureLung blend, with ceilings of 120 mg and 60 mg per serving, and the real amounts are not printed. We found no evidence that they support the lungs.

What are lutein and zeaxanthin?
Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids, plant pigments found in leafy greens, corn, eggs and orange peppers. Two of them gather in the centre of the retina, the part of the eye used for detail. They are sold together in many eye supplements.
What do the 5% figures mean?
The label prints 5% beside each name and does not say what the figure measures. It is a strength or standardisation note at most, and it is not the amount in a capsule.
Where do they sit in the blend?
Lutein is fifth. The ceiling is 600 divided by 5, so 120 mg per serving. Zeaxanthin is tenth, with a ceiling of 60 mg. Typical eye supplements use a few milligrams, so the real amounts could be tiny, and the label does not print them.
What research covers
Studies, including large trials of vitamin and mineral mixes, look at eye health and the risk of an age-related eye condition. Those studies use set doses of defined products (MSK, Lutein). They did not look at breathing.
That makes the pair a good example of the problem with this blend: a well known ingredient, but with a record in another body system.
A caution about carotenoids and smoking
There is one finding in the carotenoid story that matters for anyone who smokes. A different carotenoid, beta-carotene, raised lung cancer risk in smokers in trials of high-dose supplements (NCI, Antioxidants and Cancer Prevention). Lutein and zeaxanthin are different compounds and the trials did not test them in the same way, yet the finding is a reason for smokers to ask before taking any carotenoid capsule.
The label does not list beta-carotene. The point is that nutrients seen as helpful can behave differently in people who smoke.

You can get these pigments from food, with no capsule. Kale, spinach, collards, peas, corn and eggs are rich sources. A varied plate also brings fibre and other nutrients. If your interest is eye health, a visit to an eye doctor is more useful than a capsule, because an exam can find problems that no supplement would fix. If your interest is the lungs, these pigments are not the answer either.
What does the PureLung label say?
The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

Safety
Lutein and zeaxanthin at food-level doses are well tolerated. High doses have caused a yellow tint of the skin in rare cases. Tell a clinician about all supplements, and read the full panel on your bottle.
For the entry on each pigment, see the lutein and zeaxanthin page and the ingredients hub. Remember that the label wins over every web page, including ours.
