Omega-3 and the Lungs: Fish Oil, Inflammation and Evidence

Quick answer

Omega-3 fats from fish are studied for inflammation and heart health. Trials of fish oil capsules in asthma and COPD gave mixed results, and no omega-3 product is proven to clean or protect the lungs. Fish oil can thin blood slightly and cause fishy burps. PureLung does not list it.

What is omega-3?

Omega-3 fats are polyunsaturated fats the body needs from food. The main kinds are EPA and DHA, found in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, and ALA, found in flax, chia and walnuts. Fish oil capsules and algae oil capsules supply EPA and DHA.

Why interest in the lungs?

Some omega-3 compounds help the body settle inflammation, and inflammation plays a role in asthma and COPD. That link led researchers to test fish oil in these conditions. The results of trials have been mixed. Some show small gains in markers, and others show no clear change in symptoms or lung function (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements: What You Need To Know).

What to say about asthma

Studies of fish oil in children and adults with asthma have not shown that it reliably cuts attacks. Guidelines for asthma focus on action plans, medicine and trigger control (CDC, About Asthma). A supplement does not replace these steps.

Tell your clinician

Fish oil can add to the effect of blood thinners. If you take warfarin, aspirin or a similar medicine, or face surgery, ask before you start.

Food or capsule

Fish twice a week is a common recommendation for heart health. If you do not eat fish, an algae-based oil is an option. Capsule products vary in strength, so read EPA and DHA amounts, not the total oil figure. Store capsules in a cool place and discard any that smell strongly rancid, since oxidised oil is unpleasant and less useful.

Side effects

Fish oil is well tolerated by most people, and the common complaints are mild.

  • Fishy burps and an aftertaste are common.
  • Loose stools and stomach upset can appear with higher doses.
  • Very high doses may raise bleeding risk.
  • Some people with fish or shellfish allergy need to check the source.

What this means for lung products

A lung capsule that does not list omega-3 does not work through it. PureLung's panel lists eleven plant and nutrient names, and none is a fish oil. Be careful with marketing that pulls in the research on one ingredient to support a different product.

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

What to do next

If you want to eat for lung and heart health, plan a varied diet with fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts and whole grains. Stay active and avoid smoke. For more on what works, see the healthy lung habits guide and the lung supplements guide (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy).
