PureLung and Your Medicines: Questions to Ask Before You Start

Quick answer

Several named ingredients can interact with medicines: ginkgo with blood thinners, cinnamon and bilberry with diabetes medicine, bacopa with thyroid and sedating drugs, and green tea with some heart and cancer drugs. Show the full panel to a pharmacist before starting, and never stop a prescribed medicine for a supplement.

Why interactions matter

A supplement is not harmless because it is sold without a prescription. Plant extracts act on the body, and some change how a medicine is absorbed or how strong it is. The FDA and NCCIH both ask people to tell their clinicians about every supplement they use (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely).

An interaction can make a medicine weaker, stronger or riskier. With a blend where the amounts are hidden, the size of the effect cannot be worked out, so the sensible step is to ask.

Where the names meet common medicines

This table is a starting list, not a full one. A pharmacist can check your exact medicines, your doses and the timing of each, and can tell you whether a gap between doses is wise.

What to bring to the pharmacist

  • A photo of the full Supplement Facts panel and the side panel.
  • A list of every medicine, vitamin and herb you take, with doses.
  • Your health conditions, including pregnancy and planned surgery.

Ask three things: could any name interact with my medicines, is there a reason I should not take the whole blend, and which warning signs should make me stop.

Never stop a medicine because of a supplement

If you use an inhaler, a steroid or any prescribed medicine for a breathing condition, keep using it. A capsule does not replace it. The American Lung Association says supplements are not a substitute for care from a clinician (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy).

Emergency

Severe trouble breathing, blue lips, chest pain or confusion call for 911 right away (NHLBI, COPD Symptoms).

After you start

Note any change in how you feel and report it. If you notice bruising, shakiness, dizziness, yellow skin or a rash, stop and call a clinician. You can also report it to FDA MedWatch (FDA, MedWatch). For the full list of questions, see the medicine safety page.
