PureLung and Smokers: An Honest Answer

Quick answer

No capsule offsets smoking, and PureLung makes no such claim. Nothing shows the blend benefits smokers, and carotenoid supplements raised lung cancer risk in smokers in some trials. The proven step is to quit, and free coaching is available at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

What does the evidence say?

The CDC states that quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your lungs, and that it lowers the risk of cancer, heart disease and lung disease (CDC, Tips for Quitting Smoking). No supplement appears on that list of steps.

A capsule may seem like a way to feel better about smoking. In reality it can delay the step that works.

What PureLung does and does not say

The label names no disease and does not mention smokers. It says support with an asterisk. This site does not claim the capsule benefits smokers, cleans smoker lungs or offsets damage. Pages that do are adding words the label does not carry.

A caution that applies to smokers

Two large trials found that smokers who took high-dose beta-carotene supplements had a higher rate of lung cancer (NCI, Antioxidants and Cancer Prevention). The PureLung label does not list beta-carotene. It does list lutein and zeaxanthin, which are different carotenoids, and the trials did not test them the same way. Still, smokers should ask a clinician before any capsule containing plant pigments or antioxidants.

The takeaway

A nutrient seen as helpful in a food can act differently as a high-dose pill in people who smoke.

What does help

The steps with the best record are simple and free, and they work better together than alone.

  1. Set a quit date and tell a friend or family member.
  2. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free coaching, or text a quit program (Smokefree.gov, Quit Smoking or Vaping).
  3. Ask a clinician about approved quit medicines, which can double the chance of success.
  4. Remove ashtrays, lighters and cigarettes from home and car.
  5. Plan for urges with a walk, water or a breathing exercise.

What happens to the lungs after quitting

Over weeks and months, the airway hairs that move mucus start to work again, and cough often eases. Some damage may not reverse, which is a reason to quit sooner rather than later. People who quit at any age gain years of life, and the gain is larger the earlier it happens. See the quit smoking help guide for steps and sources.

What does the PureLung label say?

Screening

Some current and former heavy smokers qualify for lung cancer screening with a low-dose scan. Ask your clinician whether you do. Breathing tests such as spirometry can check how your lungs work (NHLBI, Tests for Lung Disease).
