PureLung and Children: Why This Capsule Is Not for Kids

Quick answer

PureLung is not written for children. The label gives no pediatric serving, no study covered kids, and several ingredients have cautions for adults alone. A child with cough, wheeze or fast breathing needs a pediatric visit, and severe trouble breathing needs 911, not a supplement.

What does the label say about age?

The label does not mention children at all in the part we can read, and the side panel with warnings is cut off in our image. The Supplement Facts panel gives a serving for the product with no age range. Without a pediatric dose, any amount given to a child is a guess.

A capsule of 600 mg of mixed plant extracts and salt is also a lot to swallow for a young child, and a choking risk.

Why adult supplements need care with children

Children are smaller, so the same amount is a bigger dose per kilogram. Their livers and kidneys handle substances differently. Many ingredients on this panel, such as ginkgo, bacopa and concentrated tea extract, have no safety studies in children. Keep the bottle out of reach, because swallowing a bottle of capsules is an emergency.

Poison control

If a child swallows a supplement by accident, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 in the United States right away.

What if a child coughs a lot?

Cough and wheeze in a child can come from a cold, asthma, allergy, reflux or an inhaled object. Each has its own care, and the pattern gives clues. A pediatric clinician can listen to the chest and check for asthma, which is common in children (NHLBI, What Is Asthma?).

  • A cough that lasts more than a few weeks needs a visit.
  • Wheezing, fast breathing or ribs pulling in with each breath need prompt care.
  • A cough at night or with play can point to asthma.
  • Smoke in the home makes every cough worse.

Emergency signs in a child

Call 911 for blue or grey lips, struggling to breathe, grunting, a very fast breathing rate, a child who cannot speak or cry, or one who is unusually drowsy. Do not wait for a capsule, a steam bath or an app. The emergency signs guide has the detail.

What helps children breathe easier

The CDC lists steps that protect children's lungs: a smoke-free home and car, treatment of asthma as planned with a clinician, staying away from known triggers and keeping up with vaccines (CDC, About Asthma). If anyone in the home smokes, free quit help can be reached at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (Smokefree.gov, Quit Smoking or Vaping).

What does the PureLung label say?

What to do instead

Skip the capsule and book a visit. Bring a note of when the cough began, what makes it worse, any fever and any medicine tried. See the who it is for page for adult buyers' questions.
