The Quitline: What Happens When You Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW

Quick answer

Calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW connects you to your state quitline, a free service in the United States. A trained coach asks about your smoking, helps you set a quit date and plan, and may offer starter medicines or a referral. It works well with a clinician's advice. No product replaces the coaching.

What is a quitline?

A quitline is a free phone service staffed by trained coaches. The national number routes calls to the quitline for the state where you live. Services vary by state, and may include text support, web chat, mailed materials and, in some states, free nicotine patches, gum or lozenges (Smokefree.gov, Quit Smoking or Vaping).

Who can call?

Anyone who wants to quit tobacco or vaping can call, including people who are unsure, people who have tried before and family members who want advice. The call does not ask for payment and is not a sales pitch.

What happens on the call

A short list of steps, in a friendly order, is typical.

  1. The coach asks how long you have smoked or vaped and how much.
  2. You talk about why you want to quit and what has stopped you before.
  3. Together you pick a quit date and plan for triggers.
  4. The coach explains medicines and may arrange starter supplies if your state offers them.
  5. You agree on follow-up calls, which often come on a schedule.

What to have ready

Have a pen and paper, your quit reasons and a list of your medicines. If you have health conditions, such as heart disease or pregnancy, say so, since it affects which medicines are suitable.

It is private

Quitlines keep your details confidential under their policies. Ask if you are worried about how your information is used.

How it fits with your clinician

A coach does not replace a clinician. If you take medicines or have a health condition, speak to your clinician about quit medicines as well. Using both coaching and medicine raises the chance of success compared with either alone.

What to do if you are not ready

You can still call and ask questions. Many people need a few conversations before setting a date. Reading about it can help too, and you can start with our quit smoking help guide.

What a quitline cannot do

It cannot treat a lung condition or diagnose a cough. For those, see a clinician. And no supplement, including PureLung, is an aid for stopping (CDC, Tips for Quitting Smoking).
