Spirometry: What the Lung Test Is and How to Prepare

Quick answer

Spirometry is a simple breathing test. You blow hard into a tube, and a machine measures how much air you can breathe out and how fast. Clinicians use it to look for asthma and COPD. It is short and painless, and preparation is simple. A supplement cannot give you the same information.

What spirometry measures

The test records two main numbers. FVC is the total amount of air you can blow out after a deep breath. FEV1 is how much of that comes out in the first second. A low ratio between them points to blocked airways, as in asthma or COPD (NHLBI, Tests for Lung Disease).

What happens during the test

You sit, wear a nose clip and seal your lips around a mouthpiece. A technician coaches you to take the deepest breath you can, then blow out as hard and as long as possible. You repeat it a few times to check the results agree. Some people feel light-headed for a moment. The whole visit may take under half an hour.

Reversibility test

Sometimes you repeat the test after a dose of quick-relief inhaler. If airflow improves a lot, that points toward asthma. If it stays low, COPD may be more likely. A clinician reads this in the context of your story.

How to prepare

Ask the clinic what to do about your inhalers, since some should be held back before the test. Avoid smoking for several hours before, skip a large meal and wear loose clothing. Avoid strenuous exercise and caffeine if the clinic asks. Bring a list of your medicines.

Ask about your supplements

Tell the clinic about all supplements. Some contain stimulants that may affect how you feel during the test.

What the numbers mean

Results are compared with predicted values for a person of your age, height, sex and background. The report may show a percentage of predicted and grades of severity. One test is one snapshot, so a clinician may repeat it over time to see trends. A normal result does not rule out a problem that comes and goes, such as mild asthma, and an abnormal result is a reason for more questions, not a final verdict.

Who needs it

A clinician usually orders the test when there is a reason to look at how the lungs work.

  • People with a lasting cough or breathlessness.
  • People with a history of smoking or dust exposure.
  • People starting or reviewing asthma or COPD care.
  • People whose symptoms have changed.

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

Safety

Spirometry is safe for most people. Tell the technician about recent chest pain, a heart attack, eye or chest surgery or a collapsed lung, as the test may be postponed. Lung tests are one reason a clinic visit beats a product purchase when breathing is the worry. See the COPD basics guide and asthma basics guide.
