Vaccines and Respiratory Health: Flu, Pneumonia, RSV and COVID
Vaccines can lower the risk of severe lung infections such as flu, pneumonia, RSV and COVID-19. People with asthma, COPD, older adults and pregnant people are often advised to stay up to date. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which shots suit you. A supplement is not a substitute for a vaccine.

Why vaccines matter for lungs
Respiratory infections can cause severe illness and flare-ups of asthma and COPD, leading to hospital stays. The ALA lists keeping vaccines current among its steps to protect lung health (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy). Vaccines do not make a person immune to every infection, and they reduce the chance of serious illness.
The main vaccines
Five vaccines come up most often in advice for lung health, and the table gives the reason for each.
| Vaccine | Why it matters for the lungs |
|---|---|
| Influenza | Flu can cause pneumonia and trigger flare-ups |
| Pneumococcal | Protects against a common cause of pneumonia |
| COVID-19 | Lowers the risk of severe illness |
| RSV | Advised for some older adults and pregnant people, and infants through other options |
| Whooping cough | Protects babies and others |
Who should ask
People with asthma or COPD, older adults, smokers, people with heart or diabetes conditions, pregnant people, and those who live or work with vulnerable people should ask. Schedules change, so check the CDC or your health department.
Where to get them
A clinician's office, a pharmacy or a clinic. Many insurance plans cover them. Bring your vaccine record, or ask the pharmacy to look it up in your state registry. If you are not sure what you have had, a clinician can often check, and a missing record is not a reason to skip a shot that is due.
Safety
Vaccines go through trials and monitoring. Sore arms, tiredness and low fever are common and short. Rare serious reactions are monitored. Tell the provider about allergies and any past reaction to a vaccine, and stay for the short observation period if one is advised.
A supplement does not prevent flu, pneumonia or COVID-19. Keep vaccines and good hygiene as the main protection.
