Wildfire Smoke and Your Lungs: Practical Steps for Smoky Days

Quick answer

Wildfire smoke carries fine particles that can irritate the eyes, nose and lungs, and worsen asthma and COPD. On smoky days, check the air quality index, stay indoors with windows closed, use a HEPA filter in one room, and wear a well-fitted N95 mask if you must go out. Seek care for severe symptoms.

What is in the smoke

Wildfire smoke is a mix of gases and tiny particles called PM2.5, small enough to enter deep into the lungs and even the bloodstream. Short-term exposure can cause cough, scratchy throat, stinging eyes, headaches and breathlessness. People with asthma, COPD, heart disease, older adults, children and pregnant people are more at risk (AirNow, Air Quality Index).

Check the air

Use the AirNow site or app to see the air quality index for your area. Look at readings in your zip code, and note whether smoke is expected to improve or worsen. Many areas have local smoke forecasts. Check before outdoor plans and again through the day.

Make a cleaner room

Choose a room with few windows and doors, such as a bedroom. Close windows and doors, and run a HEPA air purifier sized for the room. If you have no purifier, a box fan with a MERV 13 filter taped on can help, often called a do-it-yourself filter. Run central air on recirculate with a good filter. Avoid anything that adds to indoor smoke: no candles, no frying, no vacuuming without a HEPA filter.

Masks

Cloth and surgical masks do not stop fine smoke particles well. A well-fitted N95 or similar respirator can reduce exposure, but only if it seals to the face, and it may be hard to wear for people with lung disease. Ask a clinician before using one for long periods. Children need masks made to fit them.

Seek care

Severe breathlessness, chest pain, a fast or uneven heartbeat, fainting or confusion need 911. Call your clinician for symptoms that do not ease.

Activity on smoky days

Reduce strenuous outdoor activity when the index is high. Choose gentle indoor exercise. Keep rescue inhalers close, and follow your action plan. If symptoms rise, reduce exposure first and then use medicine as directed (CDC, About Asthma).

After the smoke

Open windows when the air clears. Change or clean filters. Wash surfaces where ash has settled with a damp cloth, not dry sweeping.

What supplements cannot do

No capsule protects lungs from smoke. The ALA says there is no support for detox products, and that avoiding exposure is the step that counts (ALA, Can You Detox Your Lungs?). PureLung makes no protective claim.

Plan ahead

If you live in a smoke-prone region, buy a filter before fire season, learn how to check the index and keep a go-bag with medicines. See the air quality index post and the healthy lung habits guide.
