HEPA Air Purifiers: What They Do and How to Choose

Quick answer

A HEPA air purifier traps tiny particles such as dust, pollen, pet dander and smoke particles as air passes through its filter. It does not remove gases or odours well unless it also has a carbon filter, and it cannot fix mould, radon or secondhand smoke at the source. Choose by room size and avoid ozone makers.

How HEPA works

A true HEPA filter is made of a dense mat of fibres that catches at least 99.97 percent of particles of 0.3 micrometres in tests. A fan pulls room air through it, and the filter keeps the particles. Over time, more air passes through, and particle levels in the room fall.

What it can help with

Fine particles from wildfire smoke, cooking, dust, pollen, pet dander and some tobacco smoke particles. For people with asthma or allergy, a purifier in the bedroom may reduce exposure while sleeping (AirNow, Air Quality Index).

What it cannot do

It does not remove gases such as radon, carbon monoxide or many chemical vapours. A carbon layer can reduce some odours and vapours, but capacity is limited. It does not cure mould or fix a leak. It does not make smoke harmless if the source continues. It does not clean your lungs.

How to choose

Match the device to the room.

Placement and use

Put the unit away from walls and furniture, so air flows freely. Keep doors and windows closed while it runs on smoky days. Run it on a medium setting at night and on high for short bursts. Change filters on schedule.

Ozone and ionisers

Some devices produce ozone, which irritates the lungs and can worsen asthma. Check the model against the California Air Resources Board list of certified cleaners, or choose plain HEPA units.

No health claims

An air purifier can lower particle levels. Claims that a device treats a disease or prevents illness go beyond the evidence.

Cost and alternatives

A do-it-yourself filter made with a box fan and a MERV 13 furnace filter can help on a budget. Source control still matters most: no smoking indoors, fix damp and cook with ventilation (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy).

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

Where capsules fit

They do not. A purifier acts on air, a capsule acts on nothing in your room. If you choose to spend money for easier breathing at home, a purifier or a damp repair is better supported than a lung supplement. See the indoor air post.
