Indoor Air Quality Basics: Sources and Simple Fixes

Quick answer

Indoor air can carry smoke, dust, mould, cooking fumes, chemical vapours and radon. The best fixes are removing sources, ventilating and using filters where needed. These steps protect the air you breathe. A supplement changes none of it. Test for radon, and keep the home smoke-free.

Why indoor air matters

Most people spend most of their time indoors, and indoor air can hold more of some pollutants than outdoor air. Sources include tobacco smoke, cooking, gas appliances, candles and incense, cleaning products, mould, dust, pets and radon from the ground (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy).

The three-step approach

The EPA and health groups describe three main steps: control sources, ventilate and clean the air.

Three steps
StepExamples
Control sourcesNo smoking indoors, fix damp, choose low-fume cleaners, vent gas stoves
VentilateOpen windows when outdoor air is good, run kitchen and bath fans
Clean the airUse HEPA filters in rooms where needed, change furnace filters

Smoke

Tobacco smoke is the worst indoor pollutant for many homes. Keep the home and car smoke-free. If someone in the home smokes, free help is at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (Smokefree.gov, Quit Smoking or Vaping).

Cooking

Cooking makes fine particles and, with gas, nitrogen dioxide. Use a hood that vents outdoors, turn on the fan and open a window. Cook with lids on. Avoid burning food.

Damp and mould

Fix leaks, dry wet areas within two days, keep humidity in a comfortable range and clean visible mould with detergent. A musty smell is a clue to look for hidden damp.

Beware of ozone devices

Some air cleaners make ozone, which irritates lungs. Choose HEPA filters and avoid ozone generators.

Radon

Radon is a colourless gas that rises from the ground and raises lung cancer risk. Test kits are cheap. If levels are high, a professional can reduce them. See the radon post.

Fragrances and chemicals

Scented candles, sprays and plug-ins add vapours. Use fragrance-free products where you can. Store paints and solvents outside the living space, such as in a shed or garage with a sealed lid. Read labels for ventilation advice and open windows when you use strong products. Choose low-fume paint when you redecorate, and let new furniture air out before it goes into a bedroom.

Check the basics each season

A short seasonal check keeps the main sources in view. In autumn, change furnace and filter inserts, clean vents and check the chimney if you burn wood. In winter, watch for dry air and for fumes from heaters. In spring, check for leaks after rain and for mould in basements. In summer, use fans and open windows on days when outdoor air is good, and keep an eye on smoke from fires.

Putting it together

Start with the biggest source in your home. Make one change each week. A capsule cannot filter the air you breathe, and PureLung does not claim to. See the air quality index post for outdoor air.
