Allergies or a Cold? How to Tell and When to Ask for Help

Quick answer

Colds usually come with sore throat, body aches and sometimes fever, and last a week or so. Allergies bring itchy eyes, sneezing and clear mucus that lasts as long as the trigger is around. Wheeze, chest tightness or symptoms beyond two weeks need a clinician. A lung capsule treats neither.

Why they get mixed up

Both can cause a runny nose, sneezing, cough and tiredness. Treatment differs, so it helps to work out which you have. A clinician can confirm, and allergy tests can find triggers. Keeping a symptom diary for a couple of weeks, with dates, weather and places, often shows a pattern that a quick visit would miss.

Triggers for allergy

Pollen, dust mites, mould, pets and some foods. Seasonal patterns point toward pollen. Year-round symptoms point to indoor triggers. See the home triggers post for steps to cut exposure.

What eases a cold

Rest, fluids and time. Saline spray, a humidifier and warm drinks may help comfort. Antibiotics do not help viral colds. Ask a pharmacist before using combination medicines, especially for children, and check for interactions with your own medicines.

What eases allergy

Avoiding triggers, saline rinses with safe water, and antihistamine or nasal steroid sprays, chosen with a pharmacist or clinician. Allergy shots are an option for some people. Eye drops help itchy eyes, and showering after time outdoors in pollen season washes pollen from hair and skin.

Do not ignore wheeze

Wheeze, chest tightness or breathlessness with either problem can mean asthma or another issue. See a clinician, and call 911 for severe trouble breathing (NHLBI, Asthma Symptoms).

When to ask for help

Symptoms that last beyond ten days without improving, a high fever, severe sinus pain, a cough that lingers for weeks or ear pain in a child deserve a visit. People with asthma or COPD should call early, since colds can set off flare-ups (CDC, About Asthma).

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

What not to buy

There is no lung cleanse that treats a cold or allergy, and a general lung capsule makes no such claim. PureLung's label names no disease. Spend on rest, fluids and tested medicines instead, and ask a pharmacist which product fits your symptoms and your other medicines.
