Asthma Triggers at Home: Dust, Mould, Pets, Smoke and Scents

Quick answer

Common home triggers for asthma include dust mites, mould, pet dander, pests, smoke and strong scents. Cutting exposure helps many people use less medicine. Wash bedding in hot water, fix damp, keep the home smoke-free, and ask a clinician about allergy testing. A supplement does not remove triggers.

Why triggers matter

Triggers set off airway swelling in people with asthma. Cutting them does not replace medicine, and it often reduces how often you need it. The CDC lists common indoor triggers and steps to limit them (CDC, About Asthma).

Dust mites

Dust mites live in bedding, carpets and soft furnishings. Wash sheets and pillowcases weekly in hot water. Use zippered covers on mattresses and pillows. Keep soft toys off the bed or wash them often. Keep humidity below about 50 percent.

Mould and damp

Mould grows in damp places such as bathrooms, basements and around leaks. Fix leaks, use fans when showering and cooking, open windows when the weather allows, clean visible mould with detergent and water, and dry wet items within a day or two. If mould is widespread, ask an expert for advice.

Pets

Dander from fur and skin lingers in air and fabric. Keep pets out of the bedroom, wash hands after contact and vacuum with a HEPA filter. Some people choose to find a new home for a pet, which is a personal decision to make with a clinician.

Pests

Cockroach and mouse droppings can trigger asthma. Store food in sealed containers, clean crumbs, fix leaks and use traps, not sprays that fill the air with chemicals.

Smoke and fumes

Tobacco smoke is among the worst triggers. Keep home and car smoke-free (Smokefree.gov, Quit Smoking or Vaping). Wood smoke, candle smoke and incense can also bother airways. Cooking fumes need ventilation, such as a hood vented outdoors, and gas stoves are best used with the fan on.

Strong scents

Air fresheners, sprays and scented candles release chemicals that can set off symptoms. Choose fragrance-free cleaning products where you can.

A weekend plan

Start with the bedroom: wash bedding, cover the mattress, vacuum and dust with a damp cloth. You spend about a third of your life there, so it gives the biggest return for the effort. Do one room each weekend, and keep a note of whether night-time symptoms change. Then the bathroom for mould and the kitchen for pests. Book a clinic visit to discuss allergy testing if symptoms persist.

A note on supplements

No capsule removes dust mites or mould from your home. A product that claims to protect against triggers without changing your environment makes a claim it cannot back. See the asthma basics guide and the indoor air post.
