Asthma Basics for Adults: Signs, Triggers and Care

Quick answer

Asthma is a long-term condition in which the airways swell and narrow. Signs include wheeze, cough, chest tightness and breathlessness, often worse at night or with triggers. Care combines an action plan, controller and rescue medicines and trigger control. A supplement is not part of that care.

What asthma is

In asthma, the airways become inflamed and extra sensitive. When a trigger hits, the muscles around them tighten and the lining swells, so air flows less freely. Mucus can add to the narrowing (NHLBI, What Is Asthma?).

Asthma can start at any age. It is common, and with care most people control it well.

Signs to watch

Wheeze, a whistling sound when breathing out; cough, often at night or early morning; chest tightness; shortness of breath. Symptoms may come and go, which can make asthma easy to dismiss until a bad attack (NHLBI, Asthma Symptoms).

How it is diagnosed

A clinician asks about symptoms and triggers, listens to the chest and may order a breathing test called spirometry. Sometimes a trial of medicine is used to see if symptoms ease. Self-diagnosis from the internet is not reliable, because wheeze and cough have many causes, such as heart problems, reflux, vocal cord problems and COPD. A correct label allows the right treatment.

The care pattern

Asthma care normally has three parts.

  • A controller medicine, taken daily when advised, to calm airway inflammation.
  • A quick-relief inhaler for symptoms.
  • A written action plan for good days, worse days and emergencies (CDC, About Asthma).

Triggers

Common triggers include allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mould and pets, smoke, cold air, exercise, infections, strong smells and some medicines. Knowing yours lets you cut exposure. A home check, a smoke-free rule and regular bed linen washing help.

Emergency

If your rescue inhaler does not help, you cannot speak a full sentence, or your lips turn blue, call 911.

Special situations

Asthma can change with pregnancy, with new medicines such as some pain relievers and beta blockers, and with work. Some jobs expose people to dust, fumes or chemicals that cause or worsen asthma, so tell a clinician about your work. Hormones, reflux and weight can also affect symptoms. Review your plan whenever life changes, and mention anything new, including supplements and herbal products.

Where supplements fit

They do not fit into the care pattern. No supplement is shown to replace a controller or a rescue inhaler. Some herbs and extracts can trigger allergies or interact with medicines. Always ask your clinician. PureLung makes no asthma claim.
