Humidifiers and Lungs: Comfort, Mould Risk and Cleaning

Quick answer

A humidifier can ease dry air and a scratchy throat, especially in winter, but too much moisture feeds mould and dust mites, which can worsen asthma. Aim for 30 to 50 percent humidity, clean the unit often, use clean water and do not run it constantly. It does not clean or treat the lungs.

Why people use them

Heated indoor air in winter can be very dry. Dry air may dry the nose and throat, cause nosebleeds, and make a cough feel worse. A humidifier adds moisture, which may feel better. It is a comfort measure, not a treatment for lung disease.

The right range

Indoor humidity of about 30 to 50 percent is a common target. Above 50 percent, dust mites and mould thrive, which are triggers for asthma and allergies (CDC, About Asthma). Buy a small hygrometer to measure it, which costs very little, and turn the unit off when the reading is high.

Types

Cool mist machines use a fan or ultrasonic plate. Warm mist machines boil water, which kills some germs but poses a burn risk, especially with children. Ultrasonic models may spread minerals from tap water as fine white dust, so many makers advise distilled water.

Cleaning

Dirty units can spread microbes and mould into the air.

  1. Empty the tank every day and wipe it dry.
  2. Refill with fresh water, ideally distilled, each time.
  3. Clean the tank every few days with a mild cleaner as the maker advises.
  4. Descale with vinegar if the maker allows.
  5. Rinse well so no cleaner remains.
  6. Replace filters and wicks as directed.
Do not add oils or products

Do not add essential oils, medicines or herbs to a humidifier unless the maker says so. They can irritate airways or damage the unit.

Who should be careful

People with asthma or allergies should keep the humidity moderate and clean the unit well. Keep warm mist units out of reach of children. If symptoms worsen near the device, turn it off and tell a clinician.

What it will not do

It helps to be clear about the limits, since marketing for these devices sometimes drifts into health claims.

It does not remove mucus, heal damaged lungs or cleanse smoke. A humidifier is not a substitute for medicine, and no capsule makes up for dry or dirty air. A cold, a lasting cough or night-time wheeze still needs a clinician (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy).

Other ways to ease dry air

Drink water, use saline nasal spray, keep showers short and apply lip balm. Some people set a bowl of water near a radiator. Check windows for condensation, which signals too much moisture. See the indoor air post and the steam post.
