Radon and Lung Health: Why a Home Test Matters

Quick answer

Radon is a colourless, odourless gas that seeps from the ground into homes and is a leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. A cheap test kit can measure it. If the level is at or above the action level, a professional can lower it. No supplement protects against radon.

What radon is

Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It enters homes through cracks in floors and walls, gaps around pipes and sumps. You cannot see, smell or taste it. Breathing it over years raises lung cancer risk, and the risk is much higher for people who smoke (ALA, Tips to Keep Your Lungs Healthy).

How common is it

Radon can be found in homes of every type and age, in every state. Levels vary from house to house, even next door. The only way to know is to test.

How to test

Short-term kits stay for two to seven days and are a good first step. Long-term kits stay for 90 days or more and give a better yearly estimate. Place a kit in the lowest lived-in level, away from drafts, windows and high humidity. Follow the instructions, and send it to a lab.

What the results mean

In the United States the EPA action level is 4 picocuries per litre. At or above that, fix the home. Between 2 and 4, consider fixing it, since there is no known safe level. Retest if you renovate or change the heating. Keep the result with your home papers, since a buyer or a renter may ask for it, and write the date on the kit receipt so you remember when to test again.

Smokers and radon

The combined risk of smoking and radon is far higher than either alone. Quitting lowers your risk even if radon is present.

Fixing a high level

A qualified radon mitigation professional installs a pipe and fan that vent gas from under the house to the outside. Systems often cost under a few thousand dollars and work well. Seal cracks as part of the plan. Retest after.

Buying or renting

Ask for radon test results when you buy a home. Renters can ask landlords. Many states have a radon office with test kits at low cost, and some health departments give kits away during radon awareness months in winter.

What does not work

Opening windows helps only briefly. Air purifiers do not remove radon gas. Supplements and detox products do nothing for exposure already done and do not protect against future exposure. PureLung makes no such claim.

What does the PureLung label say?

The label shows 60 capsules, a serving of 2 and a 600 mg Proprietary Blend of eleven names with no single amount; it names no disease.

What to do now

Order a test kit this week. If you smoke, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (Smokefree.gov, Quit Smoking or Vaping). If you have had high exposure and are an older smoker, ask a clinician about lung cancer screening. See the indoor air post.
