Posture and Breathing: What Desk Sitting Changes

Quick answer

Slumping can limit how far the chest and diaphragm move, so breaths feel shallower. Small changes help: sit tall with feet flat, set the screen at eye level, stand every half hour and stretch the chest. Posture is not a cause of lung disease, and lasting breathlessness needs a clinician.

What posture does to breathing

When you slump, the ribs and belly are compressed and the diaphragm has less room to move. Breaths become shallower and faster. This is a mechanical effect on how easy breathing feels, not a lung disease. Most healthy people can fix it with small changes.

Set up your desk

Sit with your hips back in the chair, feet flat and knees roughly at hip height. Keep the screen at eye level, about an arm's length away. Elbows rest near your sides, forearms level with the desk. Keep shoulders loose and the chin level. A small cushion behind the low back can help.

Move often

Even good posture is tiring if held for hours. Stand, walk or stretch every thirty minutes. A timer or a habit, such as standing when a call begins, helps. Light movement also supports circulation and mood.

Simple stretches

These take a minute each and need no equipment.

  • Doorway chest stretch: place forearms on a door frame and lean forward gently.
  • Shoulder rolls: lift and roll back ten times.
  • Cat and cow: on hands and knees, round and arch the back slowly.
  • Side bend: reach one arm overhead and lean to the other side.

Add belly breathing

Place a hand on your belly and breathe slowly, so it rises with each in-breath. Two minutes between tasks can reset the pattern. See the belly breathing post.

Do not strain

Stretches should feel like a gentle pull. Stop if they cause pain, dizziness or numbness.

When breathlessness is not posture

New or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, wheeze, a cough that lasts or swelling in the legs are not posture problems. See a clinician (NHLBI, COPD Symptoms). Call 911 for severe symptoms.

Phones and sleep

Looking down at a phone rounds the neck and shoulders. Raise the screen when you can, and take a short break from scrolling every so often, since the neck and chest both feel the load after an hour or two. In bed, a pillow that keeps the neck in line helps breathing comfort. If you snore loudly or wake gasping, ask about sleep apnoea.

What to avoid

Do not rely on posture gadgets that promise to expand the lungs. They do not change lung size. A capsule does not fix posture either, and PureLung makes no such claim. See the sleep post.
